About Thomas
Good questions are often the starting point for good work. I tutor WACE English and Maths, drawing on an English Language and Literature degree from Oxford and TRBWA registration. I enjoy the careful reasoning involved in both subjects: following a line of argument, noticing an assumption and explaining how you reached a conclusion. My style is thoughtful and conversational, with time to consider alternatives. I am happy to pause over a word, a line of working or an alternative reading when it helps a student understand the wider problem more securely.
Tutoring experience
Across six years of tutoring, I have supported students with close reading, essay structure and mathematical problem-solving. Some want detailed feedback to refine already strong work; others need help getting started or recovering confidence after a difficult term. I have experience guiding both, adapting the amount of prompting as students become more independent. I have also helped students become more selective in their answers, deciding which evidence or working a reader needs in order to follow the conclusion. This often involves revising a strong idea that has been obscured by unnecessary detail.
Teaching approach
In English, we test an interpretation against a short passage before developing it into an argument. In Maths, we compare possible routes through a problem. I ask students to explain their choices, then practise applying the same reasoning to a new task. At the end, we identify what made the reasoning successful and where it might be useful again. Students leave with a method they have considered, rather than a finished answer alone.
