About Ryan

I enjoy the moment when a student stops following a recipe and can explain why a method works. I tutor HSC English, Maths and Biology, drawing on a Natural Sciences degree from Cambridge and NESA teaching accreditation. Science is a particular interest, but clear reading and writing matter across all three subjects. My online lessons give students space to explore an idea before turning it into a concise answer. I welcome questions that connect topics or challenge an explanation; they often reveal a useful way into material that seemed difficult at first.

Tutoring experience

My experience includes helping students interpret experimental results, work through mathematical problems and strengthen the reasoning in English essays. I've supported both steady term-time learning and revision when a student feels overwhelmed by the amount to cover. I often use a student's recent work to separate what they can already do from what needs more attention. That can mean exploring why a particular piece of evidence supports a conclusion, or showing how a small change to a question alters the method we need.

Teaching approach

Expect questions as well as explanations. We might sketch a biological process, compare two possible solutions or test an essay claim against the text. I then ask you to apply the idea to a fresh example without my help. If the new example exposes a gap, we return to the idea from a different angle and have another go. There is time to think before answering.

Ryan has helped our daughter organise her biology revision into manageable topics. She is checking what she can explain from memory, rather than just highlighting the textbook.

Going over the wording of HSC biology questions has really helped. I know when I need to describe a process and when I need to explain why it happens.

Good English lessons, relaxed but we get a lot done.

I like that Ryan asks me to try the next step myself. It takes a bit longer but I can actually do similar maths questions later.

Our son needed encouragement as much as help with the content. Ryan is patient when he gets stuck and makes a point of recognising the parts he has worked out independently.
