About Nathan
A diagram can do a lot of work when a topic feels abstract. I tutor WACE Maths, Human Biology and Chemistry, drawing on a Biochemistry and Molecular Biology degree from UWA and TRBWA registration. I like to make connections between a process, the language used to describe it and the calculations or evidence that support it. Lessons are relaxed enough for questions, with a clear focus on the student's current work. I'm particularly interested in helping students understand the links in a sequence, so that they can explain what changes when one part of a system behaves differently.
Tutoring experience
My tutoring has included scientific terminology, quantitative problem-solving and explaining biological mechanisms. I've worked with students who learn a list of facts but find it hard to connect them, and with those who need more practice applying a method. Reviewing school feedback together helps us decide which kind of support is most useful. We also work on translating a diagram into a written response without losing the order of events or the relationships between them.
Teaching approach
We build a simple model of the idea first, then test it with questions. I sometimes ask students to teach a short section back to me; the explanation reveals what is secure and what needs another look. Practice tasks are short enough to review properly. Students annotate their own sketches as we go. These become a compact revision aid that they understand how to use, rather than another page to memorise.
