About Lucy
I'm Lucy, an English Literature graduate from the University of Queensland and a QCT-registered teacher. I tutor QCE English and Biology online. They might seem an unusual pairing, but both ask students to read carefully, select evidence and explain what it shows. I enjoy helping students find the words for an idea they understand but cannot yet express clearly. My style is warm and attentive, with room for students to change their minds as they work through a question. I want them to feel comfortable trying an explanation, hearing what is unclear and giving it another go. We use their school materials to keep that practice connected to what they are learning in class.
Tutoring experience
I've helped learners plan essays, interpret biological information and make their written answers more specific. Sessions might involve discussing a passage, annotating a diagram or improving a short response after feedback. I give students a chance to explain their thinking before offering suggestions, and I check that they can use the advice in a new piece of work. I have also helped students unpack command words and recognise when a question needs a description, a comparison or an explanation. In English, we might trace how a writer develops an idea across a passage; in Biology, we might follow the steps in a process and consider what happens if one changes. Returning to the first attempt at the end gives students a chance to identify exactly how their answer has improved.
