Jack

Hi, I'm Jack, a Wollongong-based tutor for HSC Maths and Business. I studied Finance at UNSW Sydney and hold a Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary). I like using everyday examples, such as comparing costs or explaining a business decision, to make an abstract topic easier to grasp. My sessions are conversational, with plenty of time to try things out on the online whiteboard. I'm especially happy working with students who understand a topic in conversation but find the textbook wording off-putting. We'll translate it into something familiar, then practise using the subject language properly.

Over two years of tutoring, I've helped students with algebra, interpreting graphs, business terminology and structuring longer responses. I've worked with learners who want weekly accountability as well as students preparing for an upcoming test. We look closely at where a solution went off track, practise a similar question and check that the method still works when the numbers or context change. I encourage students to keep a short record of recurring mistakes. In Business, we might weigh up two options for a company and discuss what evidence would justify the recommendation. In Maths, I ask students to estimate an answer before calculating, which can make checking their work much easier. We return to the mistake record regularly so that revision is based on the things that actually need attention, with room to recognise what is now going well.
